Shepherd Resources Studio

Start with Gratitude: Thank you for 30 Years, Shepherd Resources Inc. 1989-2019

We begin our foray in blog posting, with enormous appreciation for all who have made the first 30 years of Shepherd Resources Inc. so rewarding for our team. We hope the SRI blog will feel more like a creative exchange, a peek inside the architect’s journal and a personal visit to our studio near Vail, Colorado. Whether you are down the street or on the other side of the globe, we hope to offer design details that are useful, inspirational, amusing, insightful and/or enjoyable.

We want to share the essence of our architectural studio through an ongoing conversation, one that you can step in and out of, at your leisure.  We feel a blog will help fuel our continued growth by engaging with a world far beyond our backyard in order to keep learning, evolving and perfecting our craft, while also having some fun.

Since 1989 Shepherd Resource Inc. has been an architectural studio focused on creating residential masterpieces with the highest possible integrity. Our founders, Doug and Charolette DeChant built Shepherd Resources Inc. with an intensive focus on listening, creativity and details.  Our design studio has lead the way in adapting innovative architectural practices ahead of trends, driven first by serving the client’s needs.

We are lucky to have attracted clients from all over the world with a wide range of projects. Big-city brownstones, rural ranch compounds, ski-in/ski-out chalets, remote mountain hideouts and more. There are stories to be found in every project, some more personal and profound than others, some that are all about luxury and some that are about doing good for others.

SRI has an extensive resume of innovation, design excellence and pro-bono projects across the country. Doug and Charlotte intentionally created an intimate, collaborative studio that is respected and sought out for the integrity brought to every project.

Secret to 30 years of success for our architectural studio

  • Strong leadership constantly cultivating a diverse and talented team
  • Seek inspiring and engaged clients with diverse life stories and bold visions
  • Embrace challenge and thrive on creating the best possible design solutions
  • Learn from our clients as much as we learn from each other

Long before green roofs, mixed material exteriors and clean modern lines were popular design trends, SRI was successfully designing and implementing these concepts in homes that remain timely and relevant architectural design. Thriving for three decades in the high-end residential architecture industry demands the ability to weather recessions, avoid the worst design fads and evolve sustainably.

Multi-million dollar homes built for discerning clients have many opportunities for greatness. SRI offers a nuanced understanding of fine craftsmanship over excessive opulence, quality over quantity and how to bring client’s wildest dreams to life while still adhering to best design practices. SRI’s projects often involve storied names and locations, requiring the utmost privacy and trust. As elaborate as the project may seem, it is often the client’s most simple joys that drive the design intent for SRI. As the company founder, Doug has shared and inspired contagious enthusiasm for the unique details of both recent and past projects. There is always a sincere desire to create something special, meaningful for generations to come.

Our projects can be found throughout Colorado, The Rocky Mountain West and around the country. Doug is a modernist at heart and excelled academically in the study of modern design. He brings the demanding principles of that aesthetic to his work. Doug’s design philosophy of ‘if you make it beautiful, it will last’ governs every project that SRI designs. Designing a luxury home that is both architecturally bold and humble, requires the ability to defer to the beauty of the surroundings, listen to the land, observe the natural patterns, discern the light and hear the clients, plainly and implicitly. With strong intent, Doug has assembled a team of savvy interns and experienced leaders able to carry out his strict vision for excellence.

The next generation of the firm will be lead by Adam Harrison who has been with the firm for 20 years, recently named Partner. Like Doug, Adam also graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology’s School of Architecture. Doug said of Adam, “He is a passionate architect, with leadership and creative vision, who prioritizes the joy of the profession. One of his greatest strengths is his ability to lead by rightly affirming and mentoring those around him, including them in the process, and building consensus toward success, both teammates and clients. He is a collaborator.”

SRI has has also given back with a strong resume of community involvement, pro-bono projects and professional leadership mentoring. Perfectionism, innovation and humility have fueled all of our award-wining luxury residential projects. The story of Wellspring Ranch offers a great example of our desire to honor traditional rules of design while creating places with timeless appeal.

A historic log barn on school board property, formerly Miller Ranch, in Edwards, Colorado needed to be removed for construction of a new school. The barn was to be demolished and taken to the landfill. Doug saw opportunity. In exchange for receiving the building, he offered to speak with students of nearby Red Canyon High School about the process of disassembling, relocating and reassembling that building (and an adjacent log tool shed). Doug’s firm also made a donation to the school district. The building was saved and is now the main lodge at Wellspring Ranch. He followed a similar process to save two other historic structures from demolition, also reassembled and restored at Wellspring Ranch. As much as anything, this was an exercise of conscience, understanding that the buildings had lasting value, teaching the Vir significance representing the history, culture and historic architectural vernacular of The Rocky Mountain West.

Shepherd Resources Inc. is excited to see what the next 30 years bring for our design studio. We look forward to fueling the best in sustainable, beautiful and innovative architectural design for mountain resort homes in Vail to luxury estates in San Francisco and Brownstones in Boston and beyond.
